I love emails that are thoughtful. I sign up for a lot of email newsletters, and I can count on one hand the ones that I look forward to receiving.
One of them is my weekly from James Clear. If you have not heard of him, he wrote the book Atomic Habits, and is all about small improvements/habits leading to big results. Long term gain over short term wins. I highly recommend that you sign up for his 3-2-1 Thursday newsletter.
Anyway, today’s thought I would like to share comes from his second idea from his January 7, 2021 newsletter:
Solve big problems early.
Rebound after one missed workout, not a decade of inactivity.
Repair a strained relationship the next day, not years later.
Fix overspending before it becomes a lifestyle.
Problems with simple solutions at first become difficult to unwind over time.
As always, his emails are such a good reminder to keep the big picture and the long game in mind while talking small, but important steps today. I know I have learned the lessons he talks about above the hard way. I continue to become aware of what can be remedied and I am working on noticing things, and sharing my thoughts earlier so it doesn’t fester. I have been known to harbour resentment. It is a habit that thankfully doesn’t have a hold on me as much as it used to.
Wherever you start (and you should only start with one!) is fine. Pick something and decide - commit - to small steps. The simple solutions.
